Once the egg has been fertiiised it then has to make an epic journey down the Fallopian tube and implant on the side of the womb. It is estimated that over 80% of all fertilised eggs are lost at this point, whether because the embryo isn't fit for further growth or whether the woman's uterine conditions are less than welcoming.
The Epic Journey
Once the blastocyst has made its epic journey down the Fallopian tube and implants in to the surface of the womb, it then exchanges hormones with the mother's body to prevent it trying to expel the foreign body, which is the way the blastocyst it is perceived by the mother's immune system.
This is why morning sickness occurs early on in a pregnancy, as the mother's body struggles to 'allow' the foreign body to remain.
Most women don't noticve this monumental struggle coccuring within them. Once the blastocyst implants, however, a whole series of changes are triggered, and these are what are felt by the mother-to-be who is in tune with her body - and picked up by the pregancy testing kit!
